The story of 918 Griffon Squadron
Strong alone. Stronger together. The squadron’s identity grew from a community determined to create more opportunity for young people in northwest Calgary.
From an idea to a squadron
In 2017, growth at 781 Calgary Squadron highlighted the need for another Air Cadet unit in northwest Calgary. Community organizers, the Air Cadet League, and an initial staff team began the work of establishing a new local program.
In September 2018, the future 918 began parading as 781A Satellite Flight at Good Shepherd Church. Returning cadets formed the first core of the unit, and new recruits quickly joined them. Within months, the growing formation had developed its own identity, teams, and leadership.
Becoming 918 Griffon Squadron
The unit received its official charter on November 19, 2018. Its formal charter ceremony followed in March 2019, when the squadron banner and badge were presented before cadets, families, staff, and community partners.
The name “Griffon” reflects 918’s relationship with 408 Tactical Helicopter Squadron and the CH-146 Griffon. That connection joins the squadron’s aviation identity with a local example of service, teamwork, and technical excellence.
